High-velocity Japanese symphonic prog dominated by virtuosic keyboard layers and gothic intensity. Instrumental power for fans of complex, theatrical arrangements.
Ars Nova is a cornerstone of the Japanese progressive rock scene, specifically the 'Second Wave' that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Led by keyboardist and composer Keiko Kumagai, the band established a unique identity through a keyboard-centric, almost entirely instrumental approach.
Historically significant for being a rare all-female ensemble in the male-dominated prog sphere for much of their career, they gained international acclaim for their technical proficiency and dark, symphonic aesthetic. Their sound is heavily influenced by the 1970s European masters, particularly Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the Italian school (PFM, Balletto di Bronzo). Kumagai's compositions are characterized by frequent use of the Hammond organ, complex odd-meter rhythms, and a 'Gothic' atmosphere that borders on darkwave at times. The band's evolution saw them expand from a trio to a quartet, incorporating more guitar-heavy elements in later years, but the core remains Kumagai's virtuosic synthesis of classical structures and rock aggression. They are highly regarded by the 'prog-metal' community as well as traditional symphonic rock fans.
