Intro

Cairo emerged in the mid-1990s as a leading light in the American symphonic progressive rock revival. Formed by keyboardist Mark Robertson, drummer Jeff Brockman, and vocalist Bret Douglas, the band signed to Magna Carta Records, a label synonymous with the era's prog-metal and neo-prog movements.

Their sound identity is defined by a 'more is more' philosophy, heavily influenced by Keith Emerson's keyboard pyrotechnics and the structured complexity of Yes. Robertson's use of vintage gear - Hammond B3, Moog, and Mellotron - alongside modern digital synths creates a bridge between eras. Critically, they are noted for their high technical ceiling and Douglas's powerful, high-tenor delivery, which avoids the typical fragility of indie-prog for a more robust, stadium-ready sound. While they never achieved mainstream success, they remain a cult favorite among 'proggers' for their uncompromising commitment to the epic format and their ability to blend technical metal aggression with classical grace.
