Attrition

Formed in Coventry in 1980, Attrition is a cornerstone of the UK's experimental electronic lineage. Founded by Martin Bowes and Julia Niblock, the group emerged from the same post-punk ferment that produced Coil and Throbbing Gristle.

While their peers often leaned into pure noise or transgressive performance art, Attrition carved out a niche by blending industrial textures with neo-classical elements and darkwave melodicism. Their sound is characterized by a specific gear set, notably the Korg MS-20 and Roland TR-808, which Bowes uses to create a signature 'electro-acoustic' atmosphere. Throughout their 40-year history, they have maintained a prolific output, influencing the development of the Gothic and Ethereal scenes while remaining firmly rooted in independent, punk-derived ethics. Critically, they are regarded as pioneers who bridged the gap between the abrasive early industrial movement and the more melodic, atmospheric darkwave that followed in the 1990s. Their cultural footprint includes contributions to the legendary 'Bullshit Detector' compilations and soundtracks for cult cinema, cementing their status as enduring architects of the electronic underground.
