Author

Author is the collaborative project of Leeds-based producers Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin, two figures central to the 'deep' dubstep movement. Formed in 2011, the project was a deliberate attempt to distance themselves from the aggressive, mid-range heavy 'brostep' that dominated the era.

Instead, Author looked backward to the heritage of Mo' Wax, Ninja Tune, and The Cinematic Orchestra, blending those influences with the sub-bass weight of the Bristol and London scenes. Their sound is defined by high-fidelity production, live instrumental overdubs (including trumpet, saxophone, and upright bass), and a focus on 'spacious' arrangements that allow individual textures to breathe. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the dancefloor and the lounge, bringing a sophisticated, adult-contemporary sensibility to bass music. Their association with Pinch's Tectonic label cemented their status as innovators who prioritized musicality and sonic depth over trend-chasing. The project represents a peak in the 'post-dubstep' era where the genre's technical foundations were applied to more traditional songwriting and jazz structures.
