Intro

Banco de Gaia creates music that feels like a passport stamped with a hundred different borders. It is a lush, organic form of electronic music where the digital and the spiritual collide. You will hear the crackle of old field recordings, the deep resonance of Tibetan chants, and the steady, reassuring pulse of 90s ambient house. It is music that respects the silence between the notes while filling the foreground with intricate, hand-played percussion and soaring synth pads.

What sets Toby Marks apart is his ability to tell a story without a traditional narrator. He uses the studio as a loom, threading together disparate cultural fragments into a cohesive, widescreen experience. The music is often political and deeply rooted in a sense of place, yet it remains accessible and groove-oriented. It manages to be both intellectually stimulating and physically grounding, moving from the chill-out room to the dancefloor with a fluid, psychedelic grace.

Start with the landmark album Last Train to Lhasa. It is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling, capturing a specific historical and geographical tension through the lens of dub-inflected electronica. From there, explore Big Men Cry for a more cinematic, varied approach to the worldbeat-ambient fusion that defined the golden era of the Planet Dog label.

Banco de Gaia is an English electronic music project, formed in 1989 by Toby Marks (born 1964, South London, England). Marks states that he works in "world music-infused dance and ambient/chill-out styles." Influenced by the acid house and ambient house music of the 1980s, and jazz and progressive rock bands such as Pink Floyd, Marks' music incorporates elements of rock, reggae, ambient, worldbeat, jazz, and electronica.
