Intro

Founded in 1997 in St. Petersburg by Daniel Kalashnik and Dmitry Tikov, NetSlov emerged as a pivotal force in the Russian electronic scene.

Their self-defined 'bio' aesthetic was a direct response to the perceived coldness of Western 'electro,' seeking instead to integrate the 'warmth and naivety' of ethnic music with urban soundscapes. Their debut, 'Electronic Ethnology,' established a blueprint for mixing IDM sensibilities with Central Asian and Slavic folk motifs. Following the departure of Tikov after the landmark 'Outernational,' Kalashnik transitioned the project into a more robust live entity, incorporating traditional instrumentation alongside vintage Soviet hardware. The 2003 release 'Phoenix' marked a significant shift toward darker, more industrial-tinged atmospheres, reflecting a maturation of their sound. Critically, NetSlov is regarded as a bridge between the experimental underground and the broader global electronica movement, notable for their refusal to treat ethnic samples as mere window dressing, instead weaving them into the structural DNA of the music.
