Bazooka was a pivotal entity in the Dutch post-punk and no-wave scene, formed in 1979 in Nijmegen. The band grew out of 'Het Vloojentejater', a political theater collective, which heavily influenced their conceptual approach to songwriting and performance.
Led by Theo Hoek, the group moved away from theatrical music toward the jagged, abrasive sounds of the burgeoning new wave movement. Their debut album, 'Is er meer dan dit hier' (1980), is a landmark of the 'Ultra' movement in the Netherlands, characterized by a rejection of rock cliches in favor of minimalism and experimentation. Throughout the early 1980s, they released a series of albums that explored increasingly abstract and art-rock territories, such as 'À Igor S.' and 'Zwevende vlakken'. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the radical leftist subcultures of the 1970s and the aesthetic austerity of 1980s independent music. Their influence persists in the lineage of Dutch alternative music that favors intellectual rigor and sonic dissonance over commercial appeal.
