Big Sir

Big Sir is a collaborative project between bassist Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta, Racer X) and vocalist Lisa Papineau (Pet). Formed in Los Angeles in the late 1990s, the duo carved out a niche within the experimental electronic and trip-hop scenes by prioritizing intricate musicianship over standard loop-based production.

Alderete's background in progressive rock and heavy metal informs a highly technical approach to the bass, which often takes the lead role usually reserved for guitar or synthesizers. Papineau's vocal style, characterized by its breathy intimacy and avant-pop sensibilities, provides a stark, emotive contrast to the complex rhythmic foundations. Their career arc has seen them move from the relatively stripped-back, dub-influenced sounds of their 2000 debut to the more maximalist and collaborative 'Before Gardens After Gardens' in 2012, which featured contributions from members of At The Drive-In and Rx Bandits. Critically, they are respected for bridging the gap between the technical 'musician's music' of the prog-rock world and the atmospheric, texture-focused world of downtempo electronics. They occupy a similar cultural space to artists like Portishead or Cibo Matto, but with a distinct emphasis on the physical resonance of the bass guitar.
