Blackbraid

Blackbraid is the solo project of Jon Krieger, known as Sgah’gahsowáh, an indigenous musician based in the Adirondack Mountains. Emerging in 2022, the project quickly became a flagship for the growing 'Indigenous Black Metal' movement.

Musically, Blackbraid draws heavily from the melodic black metal of the 1990s (Dissection, Immortal) and the atmospheric, nature-focused USBM scene (Panopticon, WITTR). The sound identity is defined by high-fidelity production, melodic sensibilities, and the inclusion of traditional Native American instrumentation like the flute. Lyrically, Krieger explores themes of indigenous resistance, the genocide of his people, and a deep, non-theistic spiritual connection to the natural world. Critically, Blackbraid has been hailed as a revitalizing force in the genre, successfully bridging the gap between underground metal and mainstream critical acclaim. The project represents a significant cultural shift in black metal, moving away from Eurocentric themes toward a localized, historical, and environmental focus.
