Blasphemy

Suffocating, primitive, and relentlessly violent. This is the blueprint for war metal: a chaotic collision of black and death metal that sounds like a total collapse.

Intro

Blasphemy is the sound of absolute sonic warfare. It is not music designed for comfort or technical appreciation; it is a primitive, bludgeoning force that prioritizes raw energy and atmospheric dread over melody. The guitars are a thick, distorted sludge, the drums are a relentless battery of blast beats, and the vocals are guttural, echoing barks that sound like they were recorded in a concrete bunker. It is dense, murky, and intentionally ugly.

What makes them distinctive is their role as the architects of 'War Metal.' While their contemporaries in Norway were focusing on cold, thin atmospheres, Blasphemy brought a muscular, chaotic violence to black metal. Their sound is defined by a 'bestial' quality: a lack of polish that feels dangerous and unpredictable. The production is often so compressed and raw that the instruments bleed into one another, creating a singular wall of noise that feels physically heavy.

Start with 'Fallen Angel of Doom....' to hear the definitive statement of their sound. It is the record that established the aesthetic for an entire sub-genre. If you find the chaos too overwhelming, 'Gods of War' offers a slightly more defined but no less aggressive experience. This is music for when you want to feel the weight of sound rather than the structure of a song.

Blasphemy are a Canadian black metal band based in Vancouver, British Columbia that formed in 1984. The band was formed initially by vocalist and occasional bassist Gerry Bull and drummer Sean Stone, known better by their respective stage names Nocturnal Grave Desecrator and Black Winds & 3 Black Hearts of Damnation and Impurity. Shortly thereafter, guitarist Geoff Drakes, also known better by his pseudonym Caller of the Storms, would join the band. The band formed first as "Antichrist", and would see two further name changes ("Desaster" and "Thrash Hammer", respectively) before settling on Blasphemy in 1987. The band have a reputation for violence, as well as some members being involved in criminal activity; including a member smuggling both narcotics and his girlfriend onto a commercial flight to Amsterdam, assaulting a police officer, and drug dealing. Consequently, most of the members have spent time in prison.
