Boyskout emerged from the San Francisco queer punk scene in the early 2000s before relocating to Brooklyn, carving out a niche that bridged the gap between the raw urgency of riot grrrl and the sophisticated gloom of post-punk revival. Their sound is characterized by a dual-guitar attack that emphasizes texture and counter-melody over traditional power chords, supported by a rhythm section that favors melodic, Peter Hook-esque basslines.

Their debut, School of Etiquette, was produced by Jeff Salzman, who helped define the sleek, radio-ready but edgy sound of the era. Critically, they were often compared to Wire, Pylon, and Sleater-Kinney, though their aesthetic leaned more heavily into a 'noir' sensibility.
