Aggressive, high-octane blues rock with a heavy-metal heart. Gritty guitars and thunderous drums for high-speed drives and loud nights.
Cactus is often cited as one of the most influential yet underappreciated 'supergroups' of the early 1970s hard rock era. Formed by the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, the band was originally intended to feature Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart.
When that plan fell through, they recruited Jim McCarty and Rusty Day, creating a lineup that specialized in a high-speed, high-volume interpretation of blues rock. Their sound is characterized by Appice's thunderous drumming and Bogert's busy, lead-style bass playing, which provided a massive foundation for McCarty's aggressive soloing. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the blues-rock of the late 60s and the burgeoning heavy metal scene of the 70s. Though they never achieved the commercial heights of Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple, their influence on the development of 'heavy' music is significant, particularly in their use of speed and distortion. The band has seen various reformations, but the early 1970-1972 period remains their definitive era.
