Mastermind is a New Jersey-based progressive rock power trio (later expanding their lineup) centered on the virtuosity of brothers Bill and Rich Berends. Formed in 1986, they carved out a unique niche by blending the symphonic grandiosity of Emerson, Lake & Palmer with a much heavier, guitar-driven edge that anticipated the US progressive metal movement.
Bill Berends is notable for his pioneering use of guitar-to-MIDI technology, allowing the band to achieve a massive, keyboard-laden sound without a dedicated keyboardist. Their career arc saw a transition from 70s-influenced art rock in the early 90s (Tragic Symphony) to a more aggressive, neoclassical metal sound by the late 90s, culminating in the critically acclaimed 'Angels of the Apocalypse' which featured guest keyboardist Jens Johansson and a shift toward female-led vocals.
