Caustic

Caustic, the primary project of Madison, Wisconsin-based artist Matt Fanale, occupies a unique niche in the industrial music landscape. Since its inception in 2002, the project has bridged the gap between the harsh, abstract world of powernoise (represented by labels like Ant-Zen or Hands) and the more song-oriented structures of EBM and Industrial Rock.

While many of his peers focused on grim, transgressive themes, Fanale established Caustic as a satirical force, using the project to critique the self-seriousness of the 'rivethead' subculture. His work is characterized by high-intensity rhythmic structures, heavy use of distortion, and a DIY 'bedroom production' aesthetic that evolved into a polished but still abrasive sound. Caustic has been a staple of the North American industrial festival circuit, known for high-energy live performances that often subvert audience expectations. His influence is felt in the 'industrial-pop' and 'aggrotech' scenes, where he proved that noise could be both rhythmic and intellectually playful.
