Intro

Caviar emerged from the ashes of the Chicago alternative rock scene, specifically the band Fig Dish, to create a sound that was significantly more eclectic and production-forward than their contemporaries. Formed by Blake Smith and Mike Willison, the band moved away from traditional grunge tropes toward a sample-heavy, 'post-everything' aesthetic. Their 2000 self-titled debut on Island Records showcased a unique ability to blend indie-pop sensibilities with electronica and hip-hop rhythmic structures, a sound that drew comparisons to artists like Citizen King or Smash Mouth but with a more cynical, art-rock edge influenced by the likes of Lou Reed and Echo and the Bunnymen.

Critically, they were often viewed as 'too smart for pop, too catchy for the underground,' a position that made them a cult favorite but difficult to market during the transition from the alternative boom to the digital era. Their follow-up, The Thin Mercury Sound, further explored these experimental tendencies with more pronounced electronic textures. The band's legacy is tied to their role as sonic architects who predicted the genre-blurring of the 2010s, and their members' subsequent work in The Prairie Cartel continued this exploration of the rock-dance interface. They remain a quintessential example of the 'big beat rock' era, prized by collectors for their high-fidelity production and sharp, ironic songwriting.
