Haunting Nordic chamber pop that feels like a slow-motion exhale in winter. Orchestral, melancholic, and deeply cinematic music for quiet reflection.
Choir of Young Believers was the primary vehicle for Danish musician Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, whose multi-ethnic heritage (Danish, Greek, Indonesian) and time spent in Berlin and Samos informed a sound that transcended typical Scandi-folk tropes. Emerging from the Copenhagen underground in 2006, the project gained international prominence for its sophisticated 'chamber pop' - a blend of indie-folk songwriting and orchestral ambition.
Their debut full-length, 'This Is for the White in Your Eyes' (2008), established them as leaders of a new Nordic wave, winning critical acclaim for its 'cool distance' and emotional vitality. The project's sound evolved significantly over time; while early work focused on acoustic foundations and strings, the 2016 album 'Grasque' leaned heavily into experimental 80s-inspired synth-pop and jazz-inflected textures. Culturally, the band is best known globally for the track 'Hollow Talk,' which served as the theme song for the acclaimed Scandi-noir TV series 'The Bridge' (Bron/Broen), cementing their association with atmospheric, moody storytelling. Makrigiannis's untimely death in 2022 marked the end of a project that influenced a generation of Danish indie artists by proving that pop could be both commercially successful and avant-garde in its arrangement.
