Chouchou

Chouchou is a Tokyo-based duo consisting of classically trained pianist arabesque Choche and vocalist/visual director juliet Heberle. Formed in 2007, the project gained early notoriety for its conceptual roots in the virtual world Second Life, where they performed and established a visual identity that mirrors their 'virtual environment' sound.

Their music is a sophisticated hybrid of modern classical piano, ambient electronica, and dream pop. Arabesque, the son of a Czech professor, brings a European classical rigor to the compositions, often utilizing complex harmonic structures and precise dynamics that elevate the music beyond standard downtempo or chill-out tropes. Juliet, with a background in New York fashion design, oversees the project's visual language, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic of ethereal, high-concept melancholy. Critically, Chouchou is respected for their technical proficiency and their ability to maintain a consistent 'crystalline' sonic signature across nearly two decades. They occupy a niche space between the post-classical world of Max Richter and the glitch-pop sensibilities of artists like Matryoshka or Piana, serving as a bridge between traditional musicianship and digital-age isolation.
