Intro

Christopher Franke is a foundational figure in the development of electronic music, specifically the Berlin School style. As a member of Tangerine Dream from 1970 to 1987, he was responsible for the group's shift from psychedelic rock to the sequencer-driven electronic landscapes that defined albums like 'Phaedra' and 'Rubycon'.

His technical innovation involved using analog sequencers to create rhythmic, repetitive loops that served as the backbone for improvisational synth leads, a technique that influenced everything from trance to industrial music. After relocating to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, Franke successfully transitioned into a prolific film and TV composer. His work on 'Babylon 5' is particularly significant, as he was one of the first composers to use a fully electronic/orchestral hybrid score for a major science fiction series, creating a unique sonic identity for the show's various alien cultures. Critically, he is viewed as the bridge between the avant-garde experiments of the 1970s and the commercial electronic soundtracks of the 1990s. His influence remains visible in the work of modern synth-wave artists and cinematic composers who utilize modular synthesis for tension and atmosphere.
