Countess

Countess is a cornerstone of the Dutch black metal scene, formed in 1992 by Orlok. While many of their contemporaries moved toward symphonic or technical styles, Countess maintained a steadfast commitment to the 'first wave' aesthetic, drawing heavily from Venom, Bathory, and Hellhammer.

Their sound is characterized by a 'primitive' production style, often utilizing lo-fi recording techniques and simple, melodic keyboard lines that provide a stark contrast to the harsh, raspy vocals. A pivotal moment in their discography was the 1997 album 'Hell's Rock & Roll,' which introduced a traditional heavy metal groove into the black metal framework, a stylistic hallmark they continue to explore. After decades as a primarily solo-driven project, the band transitioned back to a full live lineup in 2014, revitalizing their presence in the European festival circuit. They are critically regarded as 'orthodox' not in a religious sense, but in their unwavering loyalty to the sonic origins of the genre, making them a high-value artist for collectors of raw and underground metal.
