Crispy Ambulance

Crispy Ambulance occupies a vital, if often overlooked, position within the Manchester post-punk pantheon. Formed in 1977, they were part of the second wave of Factory Records artists, sharing a sonic DNA with labelmates like Joy Division and Section 25 while maintaining a distinct identity rooted in space-rock influences like Hawkwind.

Their sound is defined by Robert Davenport's inventive guitar work, which utilizes heavy modulation and delay to create a sense of vast, industrial space. The rhythm section of Keith Darbyshire and Gary Madeley provided a tighter, more funk-inflected backbone than many of their gloomier contemporaries. Their 1982 album, 'The Plateau Phase', is widely considered a lost classic of the era, showcasing a band moving beyond simple punk structures into avant-garde and ambient territories. Despite an early 80s breakup, their 1999 reformation and subsequent work with Graham Massey proved their sound was timelessly adaptable to modern electronic production.
