In Camera represents a pivotal, if short-lived, chapter in the evolution of the 4AD label and the broader UK post-punk scene. Formed in London in 1978, the band quickly caught the attention of Ivo Watts-Russell after opening for Bauhaus.
Their sound was heavily indebted to the rhythmic experimentation of Public Image Ltd and the atmospheric gloom of Joy Division, yet they carved out a distinct niche through their use of lengthier, more improvisational structures. Guitarist Andrew Gray's distinctive 'scratchy' style would later become a cornerstone of The Wolfgang Press. Their discography is sparse but influential, primarily consisting of the 'Die Laughing' single and the 'IV Songs' EP, both of which showcase John Fryer's early engineering work. Critically, they are regarded as 'architects of the cold wave,' bridging the gap between art-school punk and the more ethereal gothic sounds of the mid-80s. Despite disbanding in 1981, their legacy persists among crate-diggers and post-punk historians who value their uncompromising, moody aesthetic.
