Cryhavoc

Cryhavoc is a seminal but often overlooked fixture of the Finnish melodic death metal scene of the late 1990s. Formed in 1992 as Preprophecy, they initially emulated the Florida death metal sound before evolving through the names Ravensfall and finally Cryhavoc.

Their sound identity is characterized by a fusion of melodic death metal, gothic rock, and 'death-n-roll.' Recording at the legendary Tico-Tico Studio, they benefited from the signature Finnish production style of the era: clear, punchy, and atmospheric. Their career arc peaked with the release of 'Sweetbriers' and 'Pitch-Black Blues' on Spinefarm Records, positioning them alongside peers like Inearthed (early Children of Bodom) and Sentenced. Critically, they are noted for their restraint; they avoided the symphonic excesses of their contemporaries in favor of a gritty, rock-oriented approach. Though they never achieved the global stardom of their label-mates, they remain a cult favorite for collectors of the 'Helsinki sound,' representing the bridge between extreme metal and the melodic gothic movement that would eventually dominate the Finnish charts.
