D2 is a seminal Bulgarian rock band formed in Sofia in 1999 by guitarist Dimitar Karnev. They are widely credited with revitalizing the Bulgarian rock scene at the turn of the century, moving away from the heavy metaphors of the socialist-era 'Big Three' (Shturtsite, FSB, Signal) toward a more accessible, Western-influenced pop-rock and alternative sound.
Their debut album, Ledeno Momiche (2000), became a massive commercial phenomenon, setting sales records and dominating national charts for months. The band's history is divided into two distinct eras: the 'Dicho era' (1999-2005), characterized by melodic pop-rock and romantic ballads, and the post-2005 era with frontmen like Deyan Kamenov, which saw a shift toward a harder, more alternative rock sound. Critically, they are respected for their professional production standards and Karnev's songwriting, which maintained rock's relevance in a market increasingly dominated by chalga (pop-folk). They remain a staple of Bulgarian radio and a key influence on subsequent generations of Balkan indie and rock acts.
