He rose to prominence in the mid-90s by spearheading high-concept projects that bridged the gap between underground rap and electronic music. His work on Dr. Octagon's 'Dr. Octocologyst' is widely cited as a masterpiece of abstract hip-hop, utilizing surrealist imagery and unconventional sampling. Nakamura's career is defined by his collaborative nature, forming supergroups like Handsome Boy Modeling School and Deltron 3030, which pushed hip-hop into cinematic and sci-fi territories. His influence extends into the mainstream through his foundational work on the first Gorillaz album, where he helped define the 'virtual band' sound.
