Darkness

Darkness is a foundational entity within the second tier of the German (Teutonic) thrash metal scene, originating from Essen in 1984. While they never achieved the global commercial heights of the 'Big Three' (Kreator, Destruction, Sodom), they are essential to the history of the Ruhr area metal explosion.

Their early work, specifically 'Death Squad' (1987) and 'Defenders of Justice' (1988), is characterized by a high-velocity, low-fidelity approach that bridged the gap between the NWOBHM influence and the burgeoning extreme metal movement. After a period of inactivity following 1989's 'Conclusion & Revival', the band saw a significant resurgence in the 2010s, releasing a string of well-received modern thrash albums like 'The Gasoline Solution' and 'First Class Violence'. Their sound identity is built on 'chainsaw' guitar distortion, rapid-fire percussion, and lyrics focusing on social decay and nuclear anxiety. Critically, they are viewed as 'cult legends' who preserved the raw, uncommercial spirit of 80s thrash through multiple decades.
