Darkside

Darkside is an Austrian death metal entity formed in 1991 by Peter Böhm and Robert Grögler. Emerging from the fertile Central European underground, they quickly distinguished themselves from the purely primitive death metal scene by incorporating keyboards, a move spearheaded by Wolfgang Süssenbeck.

Their early work, including the 'Depression' demo, laid the groundwork for a style that blended the rhythmic intensity of death metal with the atmospheric sensibilities of doom and gothic metal. Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, albums like 'Evolution' and 'Cognitive Dissonance' showcased a band evolving toward a more technical and philosophically heavy sound. Critically, they are viewed as a cult fixture of the Austrian scene, representing a bridge between traditional death metal and the more experimental, atmospheric directions the genre took at the turn of the millennium. Their influence is most felt in regional underground circles that value mood and thematic depth over commercial polish.
