Intro

Dave Stewart (the keyboardist) creates music that feels like a masterclass in harmonic elegance. It is a sound defined by shimmering synthesizers, rich organ textures, and a rhythmic playfulness that betrays his roots in the complex Canterbury prog scene. When paired with Barbara Gaskin's crystalline vocals, the result is a highly literate form of pop that is both accessible and intellectually stimulating.

What sets this Stewart apart is the sheer precision of his arrangements. He doesn't just play chords; he constructs sonic architectures where every synth patch and vocal harmony is placed with surgical intent. There is a whimsical, quintessentially British quality to the melodies, often hiding complex time signatures and sophisticated modulations under a veneer of 80s pop polish.

Start with the 1981 cover of 'It's My Party' to hear how he transforms a simple pop standard into a lush, multi-layered synth masterpiece. From there, move into 'The Singles' collection to appreciate the evolution from experimental prog-rock keyboardist to a pioneer of high-fidelity, intelligent electronic pop.

David Lloyd Stewart (born 30 December 1950) is an English musician known for his work with the progressive rock bands Uriel, Egg, Khan, Hatfield and the North, National Health, and Bruford. Stewart is the author of two books on music theory and wrote a music column for Keyboard Magazine (USA) for thirteen years. He has also composed music for TV, film and radio, much of it for Victor Lewis-Smith's production company. He has worked with singer Barbara Gaskin since 1981.
