De Press

Angular post-punk basslines collide with raw Polish highlander folk. Intense, restless energy for cold nights and basement revolutions.

Intro

De Press sounds like a collision between the cold, industrial precision of Oslo's 1980s post-punk scene and the wild, untamed spirit of Polish mountain folk. It is music built on a foundation of driving, elastic basslines and sharp, staccato guitar work that feels both urgent and slightly off-kilter. The atmosphere is often chilly and minimalist, yet it is frequently interrupted by bursts of traditional fiddle or vocal melodies that feel centuries old.

What makes them truly distinctive is Andrej Nebb's vocal delivery. He bridges the gap between the deadpan detachment of New Wave and the passionate, rhythmic chanting of the Polish Goral (highlander) tradition. This cross-cultural friction creates a sound that is uniquely 'East-meets-West' without ever feeling like a gimmick. The rhythm section is remarkably tight, providing a mechanical pulse that allows the folk influences to feel dangerous rather than nostalgic.

Start with the 1981 masterpiece 'Block to Block'. It is widely considered one of the greatest Norwegian albums of all time and perfectly captures their early, high-energy post-punk sound. From there, move to '3 Potocki' to hear how they more deeply integrated Slavic folk elements into their rock framework.

De Press is a Polish-Norwegian rock band founded in Oslo in 1980. They were among the leading Norwegian new wave bands, and also gained a following in Poland.
