Defiance

Defiance is a seminal second-tier Bay Area thrash metal band, formed in Oakland in 1985. Emerging during the genre's peak, they initially mirrored the melodic yet heavy approach of scene leaders like Testament.

However, they quickly distinguished themselves through a commitment to technical proficiency and progressive songwriting. Their tenure on Roadrunner Records in the late 80s and early 90s produced a trilogy of albums - Product of Society, Void Terra Firma, and Beyond Recognition - that documented a rapid evolution from standard thrash to complex, almost math-metal territory. The band is highly regarded by technical metal enthusiasts for their tight execution and the vocal work of Steev Esquivel, who later found fame with Skinlab. Despite multiple hiatuses and line-up changes, their legacy remains tied to the '90s transition where thrash became more cerebral and rhythmically adventurous. They are often grouped with contemporaries like Forbidden and Lääz Rockit as essential architects of the sophisticated Oakland sound.
