Dark Angel

Dark Angel is a foundational pillar of the second wave of American thrash metal, originating from Downey, California. Their sound identity is inextricably linked to the 'Caffeine Machine' aesthetic: extreme tempos, high riff density, and the pioneering percussion work of Gene Hoglan.

Historically, they bridge the gap between the raw aggression of Slayer and the technical sophistication of death metal. Their 1986 masterpiece, 'Darkness Descends', is frequently cited alongside 'Reign in Blood' as one of the most intense albums of the era. By 1991's 'Time Does Not Heal', the band pivoted toward a progressive style, famously boasting over 200 riffs on a single record and shifting lyrical focus toward trauma and psychology. This evolution influenced a wide spectrum of extreme metal, from the groove of Pantera to the technicality of the Swedish death metal scene. Despite multiple hiatuses and lineup changes, their reputation as the 'Too Fast, My Ass' pioneers remains unchallenged in the underground metal canon.
