Devourment

Devourment is widely credited as the primary architect of the 'slam death metal' subgenre. Formed in Dallas in 1995, their sound evolved from the brutal death metal of the early 90s by emphasizing the 'slam' - a chromatic, palm-muted, mid-tempo breakdown that became the focal point of their compositions.

Their 1999 debut, Molesting the Decapitated, is a foundational text for the scene, establishing the trope of ultra-guttural 'toilet' vocals and a percussive guitar style that prioritizes rhythmic impact over melodic progression. Despite a career marked by frequent hiatuses and lineup changes, including the incarceration of vocalist Ruben Rosas, the band has maintained a consistent aesthetic of sonic extremity. Their later work, particularly 2019's Obscene Majesty, saw a return to their most uncompromising roots, incorporating elements of noise and more complex rhythmic structures. They occupy a central hub in the extreme metal web, influencing nearly every band in the modern brutal death metal and deathcore scenes.
