Led by the polarizing but undeniably brilliant Ahmad Dhani, the band's sound is a sophisticated blend of Queen's theatricality, Toto's session-musician precision, and the alternative rock sensibilities of the 90s. Their career is bifurcated by two iconic lead singers: Ari Lasso (1991-1999), whose tenure defined their alternative and grunge-adjacent period, and Once Mekel (1999-2011), who fronted their most commercially successful, symphonic-pop era. The 2000 album 'Bintang Lima' remains a landmark in Indonesian music history, selling nearly 2 million copies and redefining the standards for local production quality. Despite numerous lineup changes and personal controversies, their catalog remains the gold standard for 'Indo-rock,' blending romanticism with complex musical arrangements that continue to influence generations of Southeast Asian artists.
