Their debut, 'Searching for the Young Soul Rebels', is widely considered a masterpiece of the era, combining punk's confrontational stance with the sophisticated arrangements of Stax and Motown. Rowland's leadership was famously autocratic, leading to frequent lineup changes that fundamentally altered the band's sonics. By 1982's 'Too-Rye-Ay', the horns were largely sidelined for the 'Emerald Express' fiddle section, creating a 'Celtic Soul' sound that dominated global charts.
