Suffocating, cavernous death metal that feels like being buried in ancient silt. Dissonant riffs and guttural vocals for those who crave absolute sonic density.
Disentomb sounds like the weight of the ocean pressing down on a crumbling cathedral. It is a massive, suffocating wall of sound that prioritizes atmosphere and low-end rumble over traditional melody. The guitars are often murky and dissonant, creating a sense of dread that is punctuated by sudden, violent bursts of speed. It is music that feels physically heavy, as if the sound waves themselves have mass.
What sets them apart is their ability to blend the 'riff-salad' complexity of classic brutal death metal with a modern, cavernous production style. While many of their peers focus on mechanical precision, Disentomb leans into a more organic, almost sludgy texture. The vocals are particularly distinctive, functioning more as a rhythmic, percussive instrument than a delivery system for lyrics, often buried just enough in the mix to enhance the feeling of being submerged.
Start with the album 'Misery' if you want to hear the band at their most influential. It perfectly captures the transition from their early, more straightforward brutal roots into the dark, atmospheric powerhouse they are today. If you prefer a cleaner, more modern production with even more technical flourishes, 'The Decaying Light' is the logical next step.
Disentomb are an Australian death metal band from Brisbane. They were founded soon after the disestablishment of Brisbane death metal act Cadaverine by three of its five members. Jordan Phillip, Henri Sison and Jake Wilkes formed Disentomb, together with original bassist Tom Joice. The band have released three full-length albums: Sunken Chambers of Nephilim (2010), Misery (2014), and The Decaying Light (2019).
