Disjecta

Disjecta is the primary solo alias of Mark Clifford, the founding member and creative engine behind the seminal post-rock/shoegaze-electronic hybrid band Seefeel. Emerging in the mid-1990s, Disjecta allowed Clifford to move away from the guitar-driven textures of his main band and dive deeper into the burgeoning IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) scene.

The project is most closely associated with Warp Records, the definitive label for experimental electronics during this era. The name itself, taken from Samuel Beckett, refers to 'scattered fragments,' which perfectly encapsulates the project's sonic identity: a deconstruction of rhythm and melody into skeletal, often jarring components. Clifford's work as Disjecta is characterized by a 'surgical' approach to sampling and a fascination with the 'glitch' - the aestheticization of digital errors and mechanical stutters. While peers like Autechre moved toward total abstraction, Disjecta maintained a tether to dub-influenced bass and rhythmic structures, making it a crucial link between the ambient techno of the early 90s and the more aggressive glitch movements of the early 2000s.
