Eat Static

Eat Static is the primary electronic vehicle for Merv Pepler, emerging from the legendary space-rock outfit Ozric Tentacles. Formed in 1989 alongside Joie Hinton, the project was a deliberate pivot from the technical constraints of live instrumentation toward the limitless possibilities of synthesizers and samplers.

They became a cornerstone of the UK's burgeoning rave and Goa trance scenes, bridging the gap between hippie-inflected psychedelia and hard-edged techno. Their sound identity is defined by 'alien' sound design, heavy use of sci-fi samples (most notably from Star Trek and UFO lore), and a rhythmic complexity that betrays Pepler's drumming expertise. Critically, they are viewed as pioneers who brought a sense of playfulness and thematic focus to a genre that often leaned into abstraction. Following Hinton's departure in 2008, Pepler has maintained the project as a solo endeavor, continuing to explore the intersection of glitch, IDM, and high-tempo trance. Their influence is felt across the psy-scene, particularly in the 'Gulf Breeze' and 'Mondo' styles of psychedelic dance music.
