High-octane Canadian speed metal that defined the early 80s underground. Raw, unpolished, and relentlessly fast for fans of pure denim-and-leather aggression.
Exciter is a foundational Canadian speed metal band formed in Ottawa in 1978. Originally known as Hell Razor, they rebranded as Exciter in 1980, taking their name from a Judas Priest track.
They are widely credited as one of the first bands to bridge the gap between the melodic aggression of Motörhead and the technical velocity of what would become thrash metal. Their 1983 debut, 'Heavy Metal Maniac', is a landmark of the Shrapnel Records catalog and a blueprint for the genre. The band's classic lineup featured the rare configuration of a singing drummer, Dan Beehler, whose frantic vocal style and relentless percussion became the band's sonic signature. While they briefly flirted with a more polished heavy metal sound on 'Long Live the Loud' and experimented with dedicated vocalists in the late 80s, their legacy remains rooted in the raw, lo-fi speed of their early trilogy. Despite numerous lineup changes and hiatuses, they maintain a cult status as 'the' Canadian speed metal band, influencing peers like Razor and future giants like Metallica.
