Sun-soaked Portuguese soul and hip-hop with a full live band heart. Warm brass, smooth R&B hooks, and infectious grooves for golden hour celebrations.
Expensive Soul sounds like a high-definition transmission from a beachside studio where the 1970s never ended. It is music that breathes, eschewing the cold precision of programmed beats for the sweat and swing of a live rhythm section. The interplay between New Max’s honeyed R&B vocals and Demo’s rhythmic flow creates a texture that is both sophisticated and deeply accessible, rooted in the 'Hip Hop Tuga' tradition but elevated by orchestral ambition.
What truly distinguishes them is their 'organic' turn. While many of their contemporaries stayed within the box of MPC loops, Expensive Soul expanded into a full-band powerhouse. They treat soul music as a living, evolving language, incorporating everything from reggae skanks to symphonic swells. The production is consistently lush, characterized by bright horn stabs and a bass tone that feels like a warm embrace.
Start with 'Utopia' or 'Alma Cara' to hear the group at their creative peak. These albums perfectly capture their ability to turn a classic soul sample into a modern anthem. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments that require both a groove and a sense of genuine emotional warmth, making them a staple of Portuguese summer culture.
Expensive Soul is a Portuguese soul and hip-hop duo formed in Leça da Palmeira in 1999, consisting of Demo (António Conde) as the group's MC and New Max (Tiago Novo) as its singer, MC and producer. Expensive Soul's musical style incorporates various genres, ranging from reggae to R&B. From their second album, named Alma Cara (2006), to these days, their music possesses a highly organic component. They were specially popular in Portugal from 2004 to 2014. The group released their debut album, B.I., in 2004, with which they rose to mainstream prominence. Some of their most famous songs have been featured in Portuguese telenovelas, such as the track "O Amor É Mágico" (which samples The Impressions' 1974 song I'll Always Be Here) from their third album, 2010's Utopia. Other famous tracks include "Dou-te Nada" (2010) and "Cúpido" (2013). So far, Expensive Soul has released five studio albums, one live album and one live DVD, with a show that was part of the Guimarães 2012 - European Capital of Culture programming.
