Extrabreit emerged from Hagen in 1978 as a pivotal force in the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW), though they leaned much harder into punk and hard rock than many of their synth-pop contemporaries. Led by vocalist Kai Havaii and guitarist Stefan Kleinkrieg, the band specialized in 'Breit-Pop' - a self-coined term for their brand of heavy, melodic rock.
Their sound is characterized by aggressive guitar work, driving basslines, and lyrics that oscillate between teenage rebellion ('Hurra, hurra, die Schule brennt') and dark, atmospheric storytelling ('Polizisten'). During the early 1980s, they became one of Germany's most successful acts, successfully bridging the gap between underground punk credibility and mainstream chart success. Critically, they are respected for their sharp-witted satire and for maintaining a consistent rock edge throughout the fluctuating trends of the German music scene.
