Extreme

Extreme emerged from Boston in the mid-1980s as a highly technical alternative to the more hedonistic glam metal scene. Led by the virtuoso guitar work of Nuno Bettencourt and the theatrical vocals of Gary Cherone, the band developed a sound termed 'funk-metal,' characterized by percussive, syncopated riffs and complex multi-part vocal harmonies.

Their 1990 album, 'Pornograffitti,' became a cultural touchstone, largely due to the massive success of the acoustic ballad 'More Than Words,' which contrasted sharply with the album's aggressive, funk-driven tracks. The band's evolution saw them embracing more progressive and conceptual themes, notably on 'III Sides to Every Story,' which featured orchestral arrangements and a three-part suite. Despite the grunge shift in the mid-90s, Extreme maintained a reputation for elite musicianship. Bettencourt's influence on the guitar community is immense, often cited alongside Eddie Van Halen for his rhythmic innovation and technical clarity. The band's legacy is defined by their refusal to be pigeonholed, blending hard rock, funk, pop, and social commentary into a sophisticated, high-energy catalog.
