Folk & Røvere

Folk & Røvere, led by mastermind Ulf Nygaard (Ulph), was a pivotal force in introducing trip-hop and downtempo aesthetics to Norway in the mid-1990s. Formed in 1994, the project initially gained traction with the debut 'Vi Som Ikke Har Opplevd Krigen', which paired Nygaard's sample-based production with the soulful, jazz-inflected vocals of Beate Slettevoll Lech.

Their sound was heavily influenced by the Bristol scene (Massive Attack, Portishead) but maintained a unique identity through Norwegian lyrics and a focus on local urban life. As the project evolved, it became more of a collaborative vehicle for Nygaard, featuring a wide array of guests and shifting toward a more polished, nu-jazz and pop-oriented sound. They achieved significant commercial success with hits like 'Fru Hagen' and 'Yess!' , the latter becoming a perennial summer anthem in Norway. Critically, they are respected for their ability to translate a global electronic movement into a specific regional context without losing the genre's essential moodiness. Their legacy is tied to the 'Oslo sound' of the late 90s, bridging the gap between underground club culture and mainstream pop sensibility.
