Intro

Frederik is the undisputed king of 'Junttidisko,' a uniquely Finnish blend of high-camp disco, schlager, and working-class machismo. His music feels like a neon-lit night in a small-town tavern where the beer is cold and the dance floor is packed. It is loud, proud, and completely devoid of pretension, leaning into heavy synth lines and driving rhythms that demand movement.

What sets him apart is the 'Reetu' persona: a Finnish Tom Jones who pairs a deep, authoritative baritone with lyrics that often border on the absurd. Whether he is covering international hits or delivering original anthems like 'Titanic,' there is a relentless charisma and a sense of humor that bridges the gap between genuine pop stardom and self-aware parody.

Start with his 1981 classic 'Titanic' or the high-energy 'Tsingis Khan.' These tracks perfectly encapsulate his ability to turn historical or exotic themes into local party anthems. It is essential listening for anyone wanting to understand the kitschy, high-energy heart of Finnish pop culture.

Ilkka Juhani Sysimetsä (born 2 February 1945), known professionally as Frederik. is a Finnish singer. He is also known by his nickname Reetu. During his lengthy career of machostyle disco and pop music, he has been awarded with five gold and three diamond records. One of his contemporary nicknames is "Junttidiscon kuningas" ("King of redneck disco"). Frederik started his musical career as an electric organist in a pop group named Jim & The Beatmakers. He played later in a beat pop group named The Roosters in the mid-1960s. Some of his best-known songs are "Jos jotain yrittää (Harva meistä on rautaa)", "Linda Linda", "Tsingis Khan", "Sheikki Ali Hassan", "Titanic", "Stenka Rasin", "Kasakkapartio", "Volga", "Kung-Fu taistelee" and many more. He quit drinking alcohol in 2012 and has become a political candidate for the populist Change 2011 party in the parliamentary elections of 2015.
