Gritty, low-end heavy post-hardcore with a noir heart. Dual bass guitars and whispered vocals create a tense, danceable energy for late nights in the city.
Girls Against Boys sound like the coolest, darkest corner of a 1990s underground club. Their music is defined by a massive, prowling low-end that feels both dangerous and incredibly stylish. It is rock music that understands the dance floor, but instead of bright lights, it offers shadows, grit, and a sense of urban mystery.
What truly sets them apart is the dual-bass configuration, which creates a thick, interlocking rhythmic wall that most guitar-centric bands can't replicate. Scott McCloud’s vocals often sit in a gravelly, intimate whisper that feels like he's telling you a secret over a loud PA system, occasionally erupting into a jagged shout that cuts through the distortion.
Start with 'House of GVSB' to hear their most refined balance of noise and groove. It captures the transition from their raw D.C. hardcore roots into a more sophisticated, industrial-tinged sound that defined the mid-90s alternative landscape.
Girls Against Boys is a post-hardcore band which formed in Washington, D.C., and subsequently relocated to New York City shortly after their formation in 1989. The band released albums on the labels Adult Swim, Touch and Go Records, Geffen Records, and Jade Tree from 1990 to 2002. The band then sporadically played shows from 2003 until 2009 when they became inactive as a whole. In 2013, Girls Against Boys briefly toured and self-released their first new material in 11 years. After another hiatus in 2017, they reunited for a longer term in 2021. For the majority of their existence and on every release, the lineup has consisted of vocalist/guitarist Scott McCloud, keyboardist/bassist Eli Janney, bassist Johnny Temple, and drummer Alexis Fleisig.
