Gritty South London post-punk with a deadpan edge. Spare, menacing guitars meet surrealist lyrics for a late-night, urban-noir experience.
Goat Girl sounds like the cool, detached heart of the South London DIY scene. Their music is built on a foundation of spare, dirge-like rhythms and guitars that oscillate between jangly psych and jagged post-punk. There is a distinct sense of space in their recordings, often feeling like you are standing in the middle of a dimly lit rehearsal room where the air is thick with smoke and intent. Lottie Pendlebury's vocals are the anchor, delivered with a deadpan, almost bored confidence that makes the biting social commentary and surreal imagery hit even harder.
What makes them truly distinctive is their ability to blend the heritage of 1970s Rough Trade acts like The Raincoats with a modern, 'crank wave' sensibility. They do not just play post-punk; they inhabit a specific sonic world that feels both dusty and digital. On later records, they have expanded this palette to include eerie synth textures and more complex arrangements, but they never lose that essential sense of menace and dry wit that defined their debut.
Start with their self-titled debut for a raw introduction to their 'country sleaze' sound, then move to 'On All Fours' to hear how they integrate synthesizers and more expansive psych-pop elements. It is music for people who appreciate the beauty in the mundane and the tension in the quiet moments.
Goat Girl is an English post-punk band from South London. Their initial lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Clottie Cream (Lottie Pendlebury), guitarist and occasional lead vocalist L.E.D. (Ellie Rose Davies), bassist Naima Jelly (Naima Bock) and drummer Rosy Bones (Rosy Jones). UK music magazine DIY describe them as being "imbued with an innate ability to voice the socio-political concerns of their peers with wit and style". In 2019, bassist Holly Hole (Holly Mullineaux) joined the band, replacing Naima Jelly.
