Grasu XXL (Dragoș Nechifor) is a pivotal figure in the second wave of Romanian hip-hop, known for evolving the genre from its hardcore underground roots into a more musically diverse and commercially viable form. Born in Bacău to a family with deep musical ties (his father was a jazz bassist), he integrated funk and jazz sensibilities into his production early on.
After a stint in the group XXL și 10 Grei, his solo career took off with the album 'Curaj' (2006), which signaled a shift toward high-fidelity production and melodic hooks. As a co-founder of the Okapi Sound label, he became a tastemaker, mentoring artists like Guess Who and Spike. His work is characterized by a signature deep vocal timbre, a focus on groove-heavy basslines, and lyrics that pivot between braggadocio and introspective social commentary. Critically, he is respected for his technical proficiency as both a rapper and a producer, maintaining a balance between mainstream success and hip-hop credibility.
