Gravy Train!!!!

Gravy Train!!!! emerged from the Oakland, California DIY scene in 2001, founded by Chunx and Funx.

Initially conceived as a satirical vehicle to mock an ex-lover, the project quickly evolved into a full-fledged electroclash act with the addition of backup dancers Hunx and Drunx (later Junx). Their sound is characterized by a minimalist, lo-fi electronic approach, utilizing inexpensive synthesizers and drum machines to create a 'trashy' sonic palette. This aesthetic aligned them with the broader electroclash movement of the early 2000s, but their roots in queercore and their affiliation with labels like Kill Rock Stars gave them a distinct punk edge. Culturally, they were pivotal in the West Coast queer underground, touring with feminist icons like Le Tigre and Bratmobile. Their live shows were legendary for their provocative nature, involving nudity, food, and intense audience interaction. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the political urgency of riot grrrl and the hedonistic irony of the bloghouse era. Seth Bogart (Hunx) later achieved further acclaim with Hunx and His Punx, but Gravy Train!!!! remains the definitive document of their early, unfiltered creative chaos.
