Gruesome is a prominent American death metal supergroup formed in 2014 by Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and Gus Rios (ex-Malevolent Creation). The project was born out of their shared experience touring with Death To All, a tribute to the late Chuck Schuldiner.
Gruesome's primary mission is to serve as a living tribute to the evolution of the band Death, with each release chronologically mirroring a specific era of Schuldiner's discography. Their debut, Savage Land (2015), channeled the primal energy of Leprosy, while subsequent EPs and albums have moved toward the more technical and progressive leanings of Spiritual Healing and Human. The band is critically respected for their ability to replicate the specific 'Florida Sound' of the late 80s and early 90s, utilizing period-accurate production techniques and collaborating with legendary artist Ed Repka for their visual identity. They occupy a unique space in the modern metal landscape as a 'meta-tribute' that functions as both a nostalgic revival and a high-quality contemporary act, bridging the gap between old-school purists and newer fans of extreme music.
