Håkon Kornstad

A singular fusion of operatic tenor vocals and live-looped saxophone. Ethereal, spacious Scandinavian jazz that feels like a private concert in a vast cathedral.

Intro

Håkon Kornstad creates music that feels like a bridge between worlds. It is deeply rooted in the cool, spacious tradition of Norwegian jazz, yet it is electrified by a startling discovery: the human voice as a classical instrument. His sound is defined by the way he uses a loop station to build orchestral layers from a single saxophone, creating a bed of rhythmic clicks and melodic swells that eventually give way to his own operatic tenor.

What makes him truly distinctive is the 'Tenor Battle' concept, where the tenor saxophone and the tenor voice compete and complement one another. He treats the saxophone with the breathy intimacy of Stan Getz but places it within the grand, echoing architecture of an opera house. The result is a sound that is both technically rigorous and emotionally vulnerable, avoiding the clichés of both 'crossover' music and traditional jazz.

Start with 'Symphonies in My Head' to hear the pure solo looping concept at its peak, or dive into 'Tenor Battle' to experience the full, dramatic collision of jazz improvisation and 19th-century arias. It is music for those who want beauty that feels both ancient and modern.
