Heathen

Formed in 1984, Heathen is a cornerstone of the San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal scene, though they are often categorized as the most 'musical' of the movement's leaders. Founded by Lee Altus and Carl Sacco, the band distinguished itself early on by rejecting punk influences in favor of a 'pure metal' aesthetic rooted in NWOBHM and neoclassical guitar techniques.

Their 1987 debut, 'Breaking the Silence,' established them as a force of melodic speed metal, but it was 1991's 'Victims of Deception' that cemented their legacy as technical thrash innovators, featuring long, complex compositions and high-fidelity production. Despite long hiatuses and numerous lineup changes, the band's return in the 21st century with 'The Evolution of Chaos' and 'Empire of the Blind' proved their enduring relevance, maintaining their signature blend of aggression and sophistication.
