Liquid, late-night electronica that feels like drifting through a neon-lit city at 3am. Submerged beats and warm analog textures for deep focus or total decompression.
This is the sound of the 'Pork Recordings' era at its most refined: a lush, aquatic blend of downtempo beats and ambient techno that feels like it was recorded underwater in a high-end studio. It carries a specific 1990s British sophistication, where jazz-inflected rhythms meet the hazy, echoing textures of dub. The music doesn't demand your attention; it slowly occupies the room like a cooling mist.
What sets Heights of Abraham apart is the pedigree of its members, particularly Steve Cobby of Fila Brazillia. There is a rhythmic intelligence here that avoids the clichés of 'chillout' music. Instead of generic loops, you get intricate, slightly swung percussion and basslines that feel played rather than programmed. It is music that manages to be both intellectually stimulating for the crate-digger and perfectly functional for the late-night listener.
Start with 'Electric Hush' to hear their peak mid-90s sound. It is a masterclass in mood-setting, perfect for those moments when you want to disappear into a pair of headphones. It captures that specific transition from the club to the couch, offering a sonic cushion that is warm, analog, and endlessly deep.
The Heights of Abraham is an electronica collaboration based in Sheffield and Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire in North-East England. Formed in the mid-1990s by Steve Cobby, Sim Lister and Jake Harries, they play electronica, ambient techno, and chill out. Formed in 1992 their debut releases (Tides EP and Humidity LP) came in 1992 on the ambient-downtempo label Pork Recordings (also based in Hull). With David McSherry; who forms Fila Brazillia with Cobby; Cobby and Lister created their own music label, Twentythree Records. Their album Electric Hush was voted one of the 'Top 20 Dance Albums' of 1995 by dance and club-culture magazine, Mixmag. In February 2013 (bar the Electric Hush album), Heights of Abraham moved to Steel Tiger Records.
